Universal has released an international trailer for Paul Feig’s rom-com Last Christmas. Emilia Clarke stars in the film as Kate, a young British woman who’s been struggling to get her life back on-track since she nearly died a year earlier. Along comes Tom (Henry Golding), a seemingly-perfect, if enigmatic, gentlemen who quickly begins to break down Kate’s barriers. However, as many have speculated since the Last Christmas U.S. trailer dropped, he might not be what he appears.
Among the current popular theories are that Henry is either a guardian angel, the deceased or estranged son of Kate’s boss (Michelle Yeoh, who played Golding’s mom in Crazy Rich Asians), or possibly even the ghost of Kate’s heart donor, in a nod to the lyrics of George Michael’s song “Last Christmas” (which inspired the film). Unsurprisingly, whatever the case may be, the new trailer for Last Christmas is careful to avoid spilling the beans.

Unlike the U.S. trailer, Last Christmas’ international promo establishes that Kate is recovering from her near-death at the beginning, and goes on to show how it’s affected everything from her day job (at a year-round Christmas shop in London) to her efforts to pursue a career as a singer. That said, the trailer still raises some suspicions about Tom, particularly after he crosses paths with Kate again following their comically awkward meet-cute (Kate even jokes that he’s a little “serial killer-y”). All the same, it does a good job of drawing viewers’ attention away from from wondering about Tom and onto the story. It’s a smart move too, as Last Christmas otherwise seems like a promising combination of rom-com silliness and more grounded, dramatic elements.
In addition to costarring as Kate’s mother, Emma Thompson wrote Last Christmas with playwright Bryony Kimmings after coming up with the idea for the movie (with her husband, Greg Wise) from listening to Michael’s beloved tune. The Oscar-winner’s storytelling sensibilities seem like a solid match for Feig as a director, and the latter’s decision to shoot a healthy chunk of Last Christmas in London over the winter holidays was clearly a good one (based on the lovely on-location footage released so far). Feig is also on a hot streak as a filmmaker, following hits like Bridemaids, Spy, A Simple Favor, and yes, the Ghostbusters reboot. In other words, if anyone could make a rom-com with, quite possibly, a supernatural twist like Last Christmas work, it would be someone like him.
