The new Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening reintroduces the key feature of fishing in this entry. Here’s how to master fishing in Link’s Awakening. This Zelda game is a remake of the Game Boy entry given a fresh new coat of paint for the Nintendo Switch. In this entry, the game maintains its initial gameplay and story. Link is stranded in a brand new location far away from Hyrule, Koholint Island. As the story progresses, Link begins to unwind the mystery of this island and discovers he needs to awaken the legendary Wind Fish in order to escape. Like many Zelda games, there’s plenty Link can do to occupy his time with fun and interesting side quests. This guide will show how to be a master fisherman in The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

This Zelda remake has come with additional fish to capture when compared to its Game Boy counterpart. Players can find the Fishing Pond to the northern part of Mabe Village. Speak to the man near the pond to get started. Prizes will be rewarded to the player for successfully capturing fish. Holding the A button will cast the line out farther and players can move the lure in the water. Once the fish is on the line, mash the A button to reel them in. There are certain methods players can use to improve their fishing and later, become a master.

There are different types of lures the player can use to alter how quickly the lure floats down to the bottom of the pond, Lightweight, Middleweight, and Heavyweight. Players will need to unlock these lures by fishing. Prioritize which lure to use based on the water level the fish is at. If the lure is close to the fish the player is trying to capture, move slightly to bait the fish in. Once players have the fish on the line, do not mash if the fish is struggling heavily. The line will break otherwise. Once the fish stops struggling, begin to slowly pull it in.

These items will be rewarded to the player for successfully capturing specific fish

  • Capture Your First Fish: Piece of Heart Capturing a Medium-Sized Fish: Piece of Heart and the Middleweight Lure

After a while, Mario characters will begin to spawn inside the Pond. If the Pond is glowing from the outside, this means one of the Mario characters are available to capture. These are more difficult to catch than regular fish. To capture Cheep Cheep, wait until they land back in the water before pulling the line. To capture Blooper, wait for them to stop swimming at an angle to pull them in.

  • Capturing A Blooper: Heavyweight Lure Capturing Either A Blooper or Cheep Cheep: A Secret Shell

Lastly, there’s one final fish to capture called O’ Baron. The pond will once again glow. Use the Heavyweight Lure in order to capture it as it makes it easier and faster since it sinks to the bottom. The prize for capturing Ol’ Baron is 120 rupees and a Chamber Stone. There’s one final hidden item in the pond. Players can find an Empty Bottle hidden in the bottom left behind some grass. Players can use this bottle to carry around certain items.

The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening remake for the Nintendo Switch brought many players back and newcomers to the mysterious Koholint Island. Fishing has been a staple in the Zelda series for decades. It rewards the players’ patience with neat items like the Piece of Heart. It’s a mechanic that will most likely make a return in future titles. It was refreshing to return back to Koholint Island and become a fishing master in Mabe Village.
